What technology skills are really necessary for teachers and students to use in an educational atmosphere. Is teaching word processing a thing of the past? How technology oriented should an effective teacher be? How do you keep students engaged and not distracted with technology? When and how should students learn keyboarding? Opinions, input...?

Personally, I feel that keyboarding should be taught at the elementary level. Students are using technology earlier and earlier in life. By teaching them how to key earlier you are helping to solve a few problems. First if kids learn how to key properly when they start then this will help to decrease poor keying skills. Students that do not receive keyboarding until junior high or high school have already developed bad habits and it makes that much harder to learn the proper technique. Second by moving keyboarding to the elementary, you are able to move other classes up and then offer more options to your students. If students have keyboarding and computer applications by 6th or 7th grade, then they will have more room in their schedules in high school to take additional business courses.
ReplyDeleteIt is not enough for the teacher to have strong technology skills. A teacher must have the creativity to present and teach those skills in an engaging way. An educator might be extremely knowledgeable in the subject he or she teaches but the student will learn very little if the creativity is lost in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteKeyboarding does need to be taught early in a child's education. People today type as much if not more than they write long hand. Its going to be a key part of so many aspects of life. Teachers will have to continually update their skill set with technology as time goes on, just like every profession will have to continually learn.
ReplyDeleteKeyboarding should be taught during the early high school years, no later than 10th grade. This way, students can understand the functions of a computer and how to do skills like keyboarding, word processing and an Excel spreadsheet. Technology is changing at an almost instantaneous rate and it is important that students have an idea, as well as instructors, on how to use a computer and use it effectively.
ReplyDeleteI think that keyboarding should be taught very early. Kids use computers for everything and it would be better to have them learn keyboarding right away. The elementary level would be best.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are basic skills that should still be taught in the high school classes today. However, there are many schools and teachers that are not keeping up with the technology that is being presented in the real world today. I think you keep students attracted to the course work by keeping things updated to what is going on today. Also I think that a large part of this is teaching kids keyboarding throughout their school career, so that they learn it at an early age and keep up with it.
